Our History

A Legacy of Service

The Danielsville Housing Authority was established in 1951 in response to the federal Housing Act, which created public housing agencies across the United States to address the critical need for affordable housing for low-income Americans. From its earliest days, the DHA has served as a cornerstone of the Danielsville community, providing stable and safe housing for families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.

Over the decades, the agency has maintained a strong commitment to HUD compliance and resident well-being. The DHA has consistently earned recognition as a HUD High Performer, reflecting the dedication of its staff and leadership to maintaining quality housing and responsible management of public resources.

Today, under the leadership of Executive Director Jessica Moorhead, the Danielsville Housing Authority continues its mission of providing 27 public housing units to qualifying residents, accepting applications for its waiting list, and serving as a vital resource for the Madison County community.

About Danielsville, Georgia

A Historic County Seat

Danielsville is the county seat of Madison County, Georgia, located approximately 15 miles northeast of Athens. The city was named for General Allen Daniel (1772–1836), a major-general of the Georgia Militia and state legislator who played a pivotal role in the creation of Madison County in 1811.

Incorporated as a town in 1817 and as a city in 1908, Danielsville has served as the governmental and civic heart of Madison County for over two centuries. The city sits at an elevation of 728 feet and is home to approximately 654 residents as of the 2020 census.

Madison County itself was created on December 5, 1811, from portions of Clarke, Elbert, Franklin, Jackson, and Oglethorpe counties, and was named for President James Madison. The county was originally settled by Revolutionary War veterans who received land grants in the area.

Birthplace of Dr. Crawford W. Long

Danielsville holds a distinguished place in American medical history as the birthplace of Dr. Crawford W. Long (November 1, 1815 – June 16, 1878). Dr. Long was the first physician in the world to use sulfuric ether as a surgical anesthetic, performing the landmark procedure on March 30, 1842, when he removed a tumor from the neck of patient James Venable in Jefferson, Georgia.

Dr. Long's childhood home on Crawford W. Long Street — the same street where the Danielsville Housing Authority is located — is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A statue of Dr. Long stands in the United States Capitol as one of Georgia's two honored representatives.
